VANESSA // THE VELVET VILLAGE
I first encountered Vanessa during the Banks Mill Open Studios weekend in November 2023, and was immediately captivated by her work. Her studio exuded vibrancy, and I was especially drawn to her hand-finished fringed cardigans. Upon moving into my own studio at Banks Mill, I struck up a conversation with Vanessa as we crossed paths in the corridor. She shared insights into her brand, highlighting her commitment to minimal waste practices and recounting her entrepreneurial journey. Vanessa’s approach involves sourcing vintage items and upcycling whenever possible, prioritising durable handmade pieces to combat the waste associated with fast fashion.
While speaking with Vanessa, I asked if she would be interested in participating in a new project I was initiating, which focuses on local creatives and individuals in the Derbyshire area and those making a positive impact in their community. I told her all about my intention to organise an exhibition later in the year, showcasing all individuals participating in the project. Vanessa expressed her nervousness about being in front of the camera but was enthusiastic about the concept, so we scheduled a photo session for a few days later.
